Kentucky Lake Boat Detailing FAQ

Honest answers to the questions we hear most often. Don’t see your question? Give us a call.

Frequency & Service Types

How often should I detail my boat?

Most Kentucky Lake owners book twice a season: spring opening (when you pull the cover off) and fall closing (before storage). Mid-season touch-ups optional for high-use boats. Cruisers and bigger boats often go monthly during peak season.

What's the difference between a wash and a full detail?

A wash is exterior soap-and-rinse plus hand-dry. A full detail adds hull cleaning, vinyl conditioning, interior wipe-down, windows, trim, and gel coat protection (wax/sealant/ceramic if scheduled). Most lake-home owners book the full detail twice a season.

Do you work on bass boats and fishing boats?

Yes. The work is a little different (typically less interior, more focus on gel coat and metal flake finish), but we do the full range from bass boats to pontoons to cruisers to yachts.

Do you work at marinas?

Yes. We work most of the public and private marinas on the TN side of Kentucky Lake. Each has its own rules (COI requirements, water access, quiet hours) and we coordinate with marina staff.

Ceramic Coating & Protection

Is marine ceramic coating worth it?

For owners who keep their boat for more than 2-3 years and care how it looks, usually yes. A pro-grade marine ceramic coat lasts 1-3 years and protects much better than wax. The math: 3 years of wax cycles vs. one ceramic coat is often a wash on cost, with much better appearance and protection.

How long does ceramic coating last?

1-3 years depending on the product, application quality, exposure, and maintenance. Pro-grade products applied correctly and maintained with pH-neutral soap can hit the longer end of that range.

Can ceramic coating fix oxidation?

No. Ceramic protects gel coat going forward; it doesn't fix existing oxidation. If your boat is oxidized, we restore the gel coat first (compound and polish), then apply ceramic to protect the restored surface.

Will ceramic coating eliminate the brown waterline stain?

Not eliminate, but significantly reduce. The hydrophobic surface means stains don't bond as aggressively, and wash-downs lift them easier. You'll still need to clean the hull periodically; you just won't fight it as hard.

Oxidation & Restoration

My boat looks chalky and dull. Can it be saved?

Almost always, yes. The chalky look is gel coat oxidation; with multi-stage compound and polish we can usually restore most of the original color and shine. Exception: if the gel coat has been heavily compounded multiple times in the past and is too thin, or if the color has completely leached out, painting may be a better answer than more compound.

How many times can a boat be restored?

Typically 2-4 times in its life before the gel coat is too thin to safely compound. We can measure gel coat thickness if there's any concern. Once you're past restoration, paint is the next step.

Will restoration last?

It will last 1-3 years before re-oxidation starts, depending on protection. With ceramic coating applied after restoration, the work lasts much longer. Without protection, oxidation comes back fast.

Mobile, Pricing & Scheduling

Do you really come to my dock?

Yes. We bring water, power, equipment, and supplies. We work at marinas (with their permission), on private docks, and on covered lifts. About 80% of our work is on-the-water mobile service.

How much does boat detailing cost?

Depends heavily on boat length, condition, services included, and access. A 20-ft runabout spring detail prices very differently from a 35-ft cruiser oxidation restoration. We quote in writing after we know the specifics. See our Free Quote page for the process.

How far in advance do I need to book?

Spring opening books fast — April fills first, sometimes a wait list. Fall closing is similar. Off-season and mid-season work, often within a week or two. Big restoration projects, sometimes a few weeks out.

Do you work with absentee owners?

Yes — a major part of our customer base. We handle slip access, authorize work via phone/email, send photo documentation with the invoice. You don't have to be at the lake.
