Marine Ceramic Coating on Kentucky Lake
Pro-grade marine ceramic bonded to your gel coat. UV defense (the #1 cause of dulling on Kentucky Lake), waterline staining resistance, easier wash-downs. 1–3 year service life, much longer than wax.

What Ceramic Coating Actually Does
Marine ceramic coating is a SiO2-based product that bonds chemically to your gel coat’s surface. The result is a hard, glassy, hydrophobic layer of protection. Three real-world benefits:
- UV resistance — the gel coat underneath fades much slower. On Kentucky Lake, where UV is the main reason boats look chalky after 5 seasons, this is the biggest single payoff.
- Hydrophobic surface — water and dirt slide off rather than sticking. Hull wash-downs go faster, waterline staining takes longer to set in, and bird droppings or sap don’t bond as aggressively to the surface.
- Reduced micro-scratch accumulation — the ceramic layer is harder than the gel coat, so dock rash and minor scuffs leave less visible damage.
Ceramic vs. Wax: The Honest Comparison
| Factor | Marine Wax | Ceramic Coating |
|---|---|---|
| Service life | 3–6 months | 1–3 years |
| UV protection | Mild | Strong |
| Hydrophobic effect | Brief | Lasting |
| Upfront cost | Low | Higher |
| Cost per year | Similar or higher (re-wax cycles) | Similar or lower |
| Application | Quick | Multi-step prep + cure time |
For owners who keep their boat for years and care how it looks, ceramic is usually the better long-term choice. For owners who plan to sell within a year, wax is fine.
Our Ceramic Application Process
- Decontamination wash — full marine-grade cleaning, hull tannin removal
- Compound/polish — remove existing oxidation, swirl marks, and surface contamination. The ceramic has to bond to clean gel coat for full effect.
- Surface prep — IPA wipe-down to remove polishing oils
- Ceramic application — pro-grade marine ceramic product applied panel by panel, leveled, and allowed to cure
- Cure time — the boat needs 12–24 hours dry-cure in a covered/dry environment after application. We schedule around this.
- Final inspection — quality check with a water-beading test
Maintenance After Coating
Ceramic coatings need very little maintenance to last:
- Use pH-neutral marine soap for wash-downs (no aggressive detergents)
- Hand-wash with a soft mitt, not a stiff brush
- Apply a ceramic-compatible spray sealant every 3–6 months to extend the life
- Don’t let bird droppings or tree sap sit on the boat for days — even ceramic isn’t indestructible
How We Price Ceramic Coating
Per-foot pricing with adjustments for boat condition (some boats need more prep to bring the gel coat to a state where ceramic bonds properly), product tier (1-year, 2-year, 3-year service-life products at different price points), and access. We give a written quote after we look at the boat. Here’s how our quotes work.
